Your Guests Are Already Asking AI Where to Eat in Bali.
Are You in the Answer?
Right now, somewhere between their villa pool and their evening Bintang, a tourist in Canggu is typing this into ChatGPT:
The AI doesn't check Instagram. It doesn't scroll TripAdvisor for twenty minutes like they would. It gives one answer, in about four seconds.
Is your restaurant in it?
For most of you reading this — no. Not because your food isn't good enough. Because AI can't see you yet.
The Tide Has Already Turned
For fifteen years I've watched how people find restaurants in Bali shift — from word of mouth, to Google, to Instagram, to TripAdvisor. Each wave rewarded the businesses who moved early and quietly punished the ones who waited.
This wave is bigger than all of them. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — millions of diners are now asking an AI to just tell them where to eat, instead of clicking through ten tabs themselves.
And here's the part that should get your attention: almost nobody in Bali is optimising for this yet. The window is wide open. It won't stay that way.
Why Great Restaurants Are Going Invisible
AI doesn't taste your food. It reads. And most restaurant websites in Bali are giving it nothing to read:
- Menus locked inside PDFs or Instagram photos — invisible to AI, every time.
- Inconsistent details across Google, TripAdvisor, and your own site — different hours, different phone numbers, different spelling of your own name.
- Thin or outdated reviews — AI trusts recent, detailed reviews far more than a pile from 2019.
- No real answers on your website to the questions guests actually ask an AI — "Is it good for a date night?" "Gluten-free options?" "Is there parking?"
None of this is about your food. It's about whether the machine reading the internet on your guest's behalf can find proof that you're the right choice — and say so with confidence.
This Is Not Optional Anymore
I know what some of you are thinking: "Peter, I barely have time to manage bookings, let alone chase an algorithm."
Fair. But this isn't a far-off trend — it's happening at your table right now, every single service. And the restaurants who get ahead of it in the next few months will be very hard to catch later. AI recommendations, once earned, tend to stick.
I'll be walking you through exactly what's involved in the next two posts — including what some of your competitors are already quietly doing. For now, here's where you start.
- Test it tonight. Open ChatGPT or Claude and ask the exact question your ideal guest would ask about your restaurant. See if you show up. Screenshot it — you'll want this for comparison later.
- Check your menu. If it's a PDF or a photo, it's invisible to AI. Flag it — we'll fix it.
- Check your hours and phone number on Google, TripAdvisor, and your own website. If they don't match exactly, that's a trust problem for AI.
- Don't panic, don't ignore it. Just start. Next post: what your competitors are already doing while you read this.
